Sony Patent Hints at PlayStation Controller With Unique Feature

Mar 25, 2025Mar 25, 2025

Sony could be experimenting with solar-powered PlayStation controllers, according to a recent patent. If this unique PlayStation feature eventually comes to light, it could alleviate issues regarding having to periodically charge controllers during gaming sessions.

With the release of the PS5 in November 2020, Sony introduced a new controller to accompany the console launch. Known as the DualSense wireless controller, the gamepad features some exciting technologies that allow for more immersive gameplay. For example, it includes adaptive triggers that can change tension depending on the in-game situation. Other PS5 DualSense features are haptic feedback and motion controls, adding to the experience. While not every game has made full use of these new technologies, titles like Team Asobi’s Astro Bot showcased what the controller was capable of. Recently, a patent has shed some light on a potential feature for a new controller that could benefit many gamers, regardless of the game being played.

A recent patent publication reveals an unexpected PlayStation controller development, giving fans an insight into Sony's research.

As spotted by Tech4Gamers, a Sony patent suggests that the company is experimenting with creating a controller that can be charged by sunlight. According to the description, the device would use “photovoltaic elements” in its design, suggesting some sort of solar charging. In addition, several diagrams included in the patent revealed a gamepad that looked like the DualSense PS5 controller design. If implemented, this solar charging feature might allow a controller to be charged without needing to be plugged in.

So far, Sony has not revealed any official solar-powered controller to be in production, meaning this patent should be taken with a grain of salt. Companies often file patents, and some of these never come to fruition or take on a different appearance when fully realized. However, the prospects of a controller charged by sunlight are intriguing. Removing the requirement to plug in the controller to charge could make longer gaming sessions easier, as the existing DualSense has been criticized for its battery life. That being said, it is unclear what type of lighting conditions would be needed for the feature to work effectively.

This is only one of the potential features that Sony has revealed via patents. The company has introduced concepts for a variety of features over the past few months. In regards to controllers, one recent Sony patent unveiled a rewind concept, allowing players to bookmark sections of games. According to the patent, this would let players return to that part of the game at a later date. As with the solar-powered controller patent, it is unclear if this feature will ever be implemented.

As these patents suggest, Sony continues to look for ways to innovate its PlayStation products. Hopefully, whatever new features the company has in development will benefit gamers on the platform.
